Celebrating 20 Years At CNG

Today, Equinox Delivery Manager, Derek Clark celebrates 20 years at CNG. We find out his favourite moments, along with what has changed the most

What drew you most to CNG?

I was originally working for an external supplier which used Equinox as a development platform, so when Colin Gaines (founder of CNG) contacted Compsoft who created Equinox they put him in touch with us. I had worked with CNG for about 2 years, and when I was leaving my role for another company, Colin asked me to join CNG instead, which I did. When I joined CNG I was the only one in the IT Department and the file server had pride of place in the kitchen!

What kept you here?

CNG and the utilities industry has been an interesting and challenging environment to work in. No 2 days are the same. Over the 20 years I have been here the business has changed so much, as a result the work always feels fresh and you look forward to the next challenge.

Your favourite memory?

To pick one out of so many. I think it was a lunch I had with Colin Gaines, he was a passionate and energetic man, and once while telling us a great story, he promptly spilt a near full bottle of wine all over the table. When I remember Colin memories like this make me smile.

Proudest achievement at CNG?

I think my proudest achievement is the work that was done on Project Nexus back in 2017. This was a major change to Xoserve’s systems as well as many industry changes. A lot of work had to be done on our systems and we were quite involved within industry meetings with Xoserve and Ofgem too. When our systems went live with very few defects that was a major achievement, one of which I am very proud of.

What has changed the most over the last 20 years?  

The size of the business has changed the most. When I started with CNG I think there were only 9 people in a single office on the top floor of the Schlatter building, now we have 158.

What has stayed the same?

What hasn’t changed is the core beliefs of the business. To always try our best for the customer and provide the best level of service we can.
