CNG achieves The Planet Mark™ sustainability certification

21 June 2018

Being awarded The Planet Mark™ means we are signing up to ensure year-on-year reductions in our carbon emissions. We calculated the emissions of our Harrogate HQ for the year ending December 2017 and set a target to reduce emissions by five per cent in our next reporting period. Our total carbon footprint in year ending December 2017 was 225 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (tCO2e) and the relative carbon footprint was 1.12 tCO2e per employee.

The footprint includes carbon emissions from energy use in our offices (purchased electricity), business travel and fleet, waste disposal, water usage and paper. The highest contributor to the our carbon footprint came from electricity emissions, accounting for 75 per cent of total emissions followed by travel, which accounted for 21.3 per cent.

The Planet Mark™ carbon footprint report also shows how well Team CNG is performing against the UN Sustainable Development Goals, also known as the ‘Global Goals’.

Ellis Hall said: “We’re committed to being able to demonstrate our sustainability credentials and The Planet Mark™ provides us with a platform to do this in a structured, engaging way. The whole team is delighted to accept this certificate and we’re all very excited to play a role in ensuring our success in maintaining it.”

Presenting the award, founder of The Planet Mark™ Steve Malkin, said: “The team at CNG has grasped The Planet Mark™ and the Global Goals.  CNG has created individual teams to deliver on four of their chosen Global Goals and have initiatives underway to cut carbon, energy, water and waste.  It is great to see such a big energy company embracing sustainability with such enthusiasm.”

The Planet Mark™ Certificate recognises our good practice in sustainability, including:

  • measuring carbon emissions from electricity, travel, waste disposal, water and paper
  • investing in the Eden Project to support education on climate change
  • storing 260 tCO2e by protecting one acre of endangered rainforest through the charity Cool Earth
  • committing to engage employees and suppliers to drive improvements

Some of the ways we’re working on meeting our targets include: the rollout of our Bright Sparks education programme within schools, in line with the ‘Quality Education’ commitment, increasing the knowledge and availability of renewable energy and low carbon technology to customers to address the ‘Clean and Affordable Energy’ goal and focusing on ‘Life on Land’ through our continued partnership with the Woodland Trust – restoring ancient woodland and helping to plant new woods across the UK. Longer term, we plan to actively pursue all 17 areas of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

The Planet Mark™ was founded in 2013 with the iconic Eden Project in Cornwall, UK, and is awarded to businesses, properties, new developments and projects that are committed to reducing their carbon emissions.

Since it launched, The Planet Mark™ has certified over 100 organisations and helped holders of The Planet Mark™ cut their average carbon emissions per employee by 10 per cent per annum.

Holders of The Planet Mark™ have a minimum requirement to reduce their carbon emissions by 2.5 per cent per year.
