Why Electric Vehicle charging is growing in demand
UK sales of EV tripled in 2020, which saw figures tip over 100,000. Why the rise in demand for EV?
It happened. At the end of 2020, Norway revealed that the market share of Electric Vehicles (EV) rose to a record high of 54%, making it the first country in the world to have all Electric Vehicles dominate its petrol and diesel counterparts. Rewind 10 years ago and the market share was 1%.
Is the UK heading the same way?
UK sales of EV tripled in 2020, which saw figures tip over 100,000, seeing a market share increase from 1.6% to 6.6%. Industry experts are now predicting that more than 200,000 new EVs will be sold in 2021.
Why the rise in demand for EV?
Government 2030 ban on petrol and diesel cars
The Government has brought forward the ban on the sale of petrol and diesel cars to 2030 from the original 2035 date, as part of the Prime Minister’s green plan to tackle climate change.
Grants and funding
Buyers of EV can get a discount on the price of a new plug-in vehicle through a Government funding to vehicle dealerships and manufacturers which is taken off the vehicle price. This can equate to up to £3000 off the RRP.
As well as this, a grant is available for £350 (including VAT) against the cost of installing a charger at home through the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme.
There is a growing awareness and desire for businesses to become ‘greener’ from the Government’s Net Zero target, to consumer appeal in choosing brands with an ethical and environmental conscience.
Improvement in technology
In the past, there have been questions around the technology of EV and the affordability of owning one. Manufacturers are continuing to introduce new models that are more aesthetically pleasing and wallet friendly. Charging infrastructure has also had to develop to support the growth, and now there are various charging solutions to suit both site and need.
