Our CNGers reach new heights for charity
29 May 2019
We couldn’t be prouder of some of our CNG family for really stepping up and over our latest charity challenge at the weekend. Talk about a leap of faith!
They were raising money for Ripon Cathedral Renewed, supporting the development plans for a 21st Century Yorkshire Cathedral by abseiling down the side of it! All 83 meters of it!
Rosie, Hannah and Claire were one of four groups taking on the challenge that day. After getting suited and booted in their helmets and harnesses, they were shown how to abseil on a practice rope.
They waited on the roof, trying to focus on the panoramic views and not their nerves, then it was time to step over the edge. Claire and fellow volunteer Charlotte were first up and despite feeling a little jittery to begin with, they bravely made their way to the bottom and touched down on the ground. Next up were Rosie and Hannah who were the last two abseilers of the day. Pressure was on, everyone else had nailed it so there was no backing out now. With a cheering group of supporters below them, they made their way down the side of the 7th Century Cathedral and were reunited with the others.
Relieved to be back on the ground, the girls posed for pictures with their well earned medals and certificates.
Claire said: “Well! What a day it was! Filled will all emotions! It was the most challenging thing I have ever done! It was so worth it for a good cause but not sure I will be in a hurry to do it again!”
We’re so proud of our intrepid abseilers, not only for taking on such a daunting challenge and fundraising for such a worthy cause, but also for working so well as a team. Collectively, the four groups that took part have raised over £15,000 for the Cathedral! In true CNG fashion, they motivated and encouraged each other to overcome their fears and smashed their goals. It doesn’t stop there! Any extra funds they manage to raise will be donated to our 25th Anniversary fundraising pot which supports 25 charities including Saint Michael’s Hospice, Candlelighters, Martin House and Harrogate Homeless.
