Shower Up - our renewable energy project is now complete!
5 February 2020
Back in 2017, we crowdfunded over £50,000 in under 35 days to enable the design and build of fully-equipped, solar powered shower blocks (made from recycled shipping containers) for Turasha School in Kenya.
Turasha Boarding School is home to over 600 pupils and due to the lack of Government funding and intake pressures, some of the school’s facilities were at breaking point.
Especially the student shower blocks, which were bare shells where pupils washed using buckets of cold water.
With the new showers, the pupils can wash in a safe and clean environment, reducing the risk of health and hygiene complications that existed with the older facilities.
Dr Paul Ng’Ang’A Kifuika, Board of Management Chairman at Turasha said: “We are very, very appreciative of being chosen and grateful to CNG and everyone who contributed.”
Sarah Khatoyi, Teacher, added: “The pupils are energetic enough to wake up because the showers are hot and they are concentrating fully on their studies. We asked one of the students how they feel about the hot showers and they were like – WOW!”
Ellis Hall, CNG Renewables Lead said: “It’s amazing to see this project live and the showers in use. We’ve faced some delays, but all in the pursuit of making sure the school had the best outcome and we’re proud to see this come into fruition for the pupils. A huge thanks of course to our supporters, without whom, this wouldn’t have been possible.”
